Practice Overview

Barbara Kastama is a partner in the firm.  She joined the firm in 2002, and focuses her practice on the defense of employment, personal injury, and contract actions.  She defends private employers, public entities and non-profit corporations against claims for employment discrimination, wage and hour violations, and intentional torts committed by third parties.   In addition to her litigation practice, she provides employment law counseling and workplace training to clients.

Prior to joining the firm, she practiced at Perkins Coie and served as a legal consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  She also was a National Board Certified high school teacher.

Representative Cases

  • N.K. v. Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter Day Saints, et al. – obtained summary judgment dismissing the Boy Scouts of America from claim alleging negligence in failing to prevent sexual abuse by a third party; affirmed 3-0 by the Washington Court of Appeals, N.K. v. Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter Day Saints, et al., 175 Wn. App. 517, 307 P.3d 730 (2013).
  • Litchfield v. KPMG – filed amicus brief on behalf of professional society regarding exempt status of first-year audit associates in global accounting firm.
  • Toungate v. Konica Minolta Business Solutions – defended employer against claims of disability discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Washington Law Against Discrimination; removed the action to federal court and obtained summary judgment dismissing all claims.
  • Beaumont v. Pierce County Housing Authority – defended employer against claims of disability discrimination, wrongful discharge in violation of public policy, and retaliation; successfully argued summary judgment dismissing all claims.
  • Olson, et al. v. Pierce County Housing Authority, et al. – resolved claims against employer in lawsuit involving retaliation and Section 1983 claims.
  • Tully's Coffee Corporation v. Ueshima Coffee Co., Ltd. – member of the Corr Cronin team that defended a Seattle coffee corporation against a declaratory action brought by a large Japanese coffee company, involving complex e-discovery disputes.
